“My work is nothing but a portal that enables the viewer to see the beauty in the world.”
A recent graduate of the Visual Arts Program at the University of Denver, Audrey Zurcher likes to create art through an optimistic lens. Guided by her comprehensive international travel, she delights in inter-cultural exposure. Through the motif of light, Zurcher works towards emphasizing elements that she finds beautiful and momentous, specifically in nature.
The Water Turtles with Attitude series was inspired by a trip to the Galapagos Islands. There she discovered colors that she had never seen before, whether on the ground, in the air, or under water. Add the amazing fauna, and the adventure turned into an artist’s paradise. She was mostly smitten with the islands’ marine life, in particular several aquatic encounters with the Green Sea Turtle. Their behavior and appearance somehow exuded enviable individuality and self-confidence.
On the other side of the globe, the unique patterns of the zebra stripes juxtaposing with the southern African brush, also elicited a creative response. All the zebra knows is that it must be free.
Her animal subjects have the ability to interact with the viewer. Zurcher’s pencil and pen drawings are scientifically accurate and detailed, yet playful. Reflecting her multi-faceted passions in life, Zurcher’s art is also very diverse. Her acrylic paintings are an expression of abstract realism depicting not only animals, but also landscapes and portraits.
