Jarrett Tishmack is a sculptor, craftsman, and designer whose work is rooted in a lifelong connection to natural materials, the built environment, and the landscapes of the American West. A native of New Mexico who was raised in Colorado, he draws continual inspiration from the forms, textures, and rhythms of the natural world.
With more than two decades of experience in woodworking, stone carving, and custom homebuilding, Tishmack creates sculptures that embody both technical mastery and a deep respect for material, form, and process. A graduate of Colorado State University's forestry program and a master carpenter by profession, his practice is informed by the precision, durability, and purpose of a builder while embracing the expressive possibilities of contemporary sculpture.
Working primarily in wood and stone, Tishmack explores the relationship between structure, texture, and time, allowing the inherent character of each material to guide the evolution of a piece. His work often begins not with a preconceived concept, but with the discovery of a material itself. Using naturally sourced wood and stone as creative catalysts, he develops forms that reflect his commitment to environmental stewardship and authentic craftsmanship.
From an early age, Tishmack was introduced to the artistry of stone through helping his father install intricate tile work and learning the nuances of cutting stone with diamond tools. This fascination ultimately led him to Pietrasanta, Italy, near Carrara, where he studied stone carving and immersed himself in the traditions of marble sculpture. The experience continues to inform his approach to material, form, and finish, grounding his work in both classical knowledge and contemporary practice.
Combining wood and stone became a natural extension of his artistic vision. In recent works, he has paired Colorado Yule marble with locally harvested walnut, creating sculptures that celebrate both contrast and harmony. For Tishmack, the creative process lies not only in the finished object but also in the challenge of fitting and uniting these distinct materials into a cohesive whole.
Whether carving stone, shaping wood, designing furniture, or creating architectural spaces, Tishmack is guided by a commitment to thoughtful craftsmanship and enduring design. His work reflects a belief that objects and environments should feel grounded, authentic, and timeless, fostering meaningful connections between material, maker, and viewer.
When he is not creating in the studio, Tishmack can often be found outdoors or in the water, sharing adventures with his girlfriend, Kathryn. An accomplished open-water swimmer, he has completed numerous inter-island ocean channel crossings, including three first-known crossings. These experiences, like his artistic practice, reflect a deep appreciation for challenge, exploration, and the natural world.
